It was a short drive, not longer than fifteen minutes, but Toy was asleep before I even turned onto her street. When I pulled into the driveway I shook her shoulder, trying to rouse her as gently as possible. She yawned, blinking rapidly, and stretched her arms above her head before turning to face me.
"You're coming inside, right?"
"Uhâ¦" I glanced at the digital interface on the dashboard. I already knew it was after one, but that gave me a moment to think.
"I shouldn't."
Instantly, her relaxed face tightened into a pout. "But you said."
"Yeah, but that was before the drinks and the herb."
She pursed her lips. "Are you a D.A.R.E. rep or some shit now?"
I laughed. "Nah, I just don't want anything to happen unless you're clearheaded. I ain't for blaming it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol."
A soft giggle escaped her lips and I had a very strong inclination to make her laugh again so that I could kiss her and swallow down the sound to see if it tasted as sweet as it felt to my ears. The sappiness of my thoughts hit me in the chest hard.
"Not that it matters, but I only had a quarter of that cereal bar."
"And two sour-apple gummies," I reminded her. "But why doesn't it matter?"
She gave me a look that clearly called me stupid. "Because you knew what I wanted well before I had any of that."
I opened my mouth to respond, but she shook her head, the motion causing me to pause. "You know what? It's all good." Keys in hand, she pushed open the door, set one foot on the ground, and turned to look at me. "One thing I shouldn't have to do is convince somebody to give me what I want. You have a good night."
Wait, what? This conversation was like a race car headed toward a cliff with no bridge and alarms blared in my head for me to course-correct.
"That's notâ" Before I could finish my thought, she had closed the door and was walking up the driveway. I was out of the car and in front of her before she made it past the car I'd parked behind.
"Wait, wait."
She stared up at me with a quirked brow, but other than that one indicator, her face was incredibly blank. That was somehow scarier than if she she'd been scowling. Anger, I could work with; indifference was a monster I didn't know how to tame.
"I think we got our wires crossed somewhere and I need to straighten things out."
Both of her brows raised in surprise. "Did we? I think I understood you pretty clearly."
Considering that I hadn't explained myself, that was impossible. "Can we talk?"
"Isn't that what we're doing?"
"Nah, I mean likeâ¦inside." I nodded toward the two-story, red-brick building. "Can we go inside and talk?"
Her hands settled on her hips. "Unless you're tryna fuck, I don't see the point of letting you in my house right now."
Dragging a hand down my face, I sighed. If ever there was a need for old Lew to be resurrected, now would be that time.
